SUSTAINABLE DESIGN BASICS

With global problems and environmental issues rising at an increasingly steady rate, it is of utmost importance that economies worldwide adopt sustainability at the helm of all their forthcoming decisions, in order to make sure that non-renewable natural resources aren’t exhausted. For this, sustainability needs to be so deeply integrated into design that it is no longer a separate concept but instead the way design simply is.

For this, the reading explains 5 fundamental concepts that need to be understood in order to implement sustainability effectively, namely: Systems approach, dematerialisation, sustainable alternatives, biomimicry, and cradle to cradle. These concepts explore the How’s, why’s and where’s of sustainability—a product’s compatibility with the ecosystem, how it reduces its impacts on the environment, the effective minimisation of the usage of resources, components and energy used in it’s production, the use of eco-friendly alternatives for material, etc. Again, we come across the term ‘biomimicry’—which emphasises how much of a role it plays and how essential it is in the path towards a sustainable future.

Going forward, it is not enough to focus on design that improves life for humans. Rather, it is of even bigger importance to focus on design that gives back to the environment, as opposed to the past where natural resources were simply exploited with no compensation or counterbalance.
