DESIGN SENSIBILITIES

An Industry that’s often dismissed as frivolous or trivial, the design world now gains increasing recognition for the important role it plays in problem solving and productivity. The complexities of a field otherwise overlooked are now bought to light— the thought and expert intuition invested in the art, developed and fine-tuned over time– that admittedly, I’d failed to reflect upon until now.

And thus we explore the concept of design sensibility: the idea of bringing in emotion and humaneness to businesses in the market, based purely upon intuitive judgement. It introduces an entirely new perspective– that of the designer’s eye, one I hope to develop and ultimately perfect in the design journey ahead of me (I have a long way to go!)

“Designers’ perceptions reflect on an awareness that our surroundings are created, and of the artistry that goes into their creation. Designers see physical, cultural and metaphoric relationships…as well as the atmospheres that those tendencies create.”

The moment I read this line could pinpoint the turning point at which my eyes had been opened; Expressing the depth at which they think and their attention to detail and story, it gives us an insight to designers’ train of thought as they tackle complex problems with solutions only they can craft.

Professor Carlos’ first lecture taught me that design does not conform to one rigid discipline or scale, and does not follow a set of rules or guidelines– “there’s no right or wrong”, he’d said. As the shallow saying goes, ‘beauty is skin deep’. it’s also a saying most people would disagree with, and being an industry that’s often assumed to be closely associated with fashion and beauty, one might make a connection and claim design is skin deep— nothing more than a facade of aesthetics with not a lot of depth to it. But as we’ve learnt, design has so much more to it than just that– it brings warmth to an otherwise unfeeling market and optimises product usability, among other things, in more ways than one.

“Design sensibilities are essentially human sensibilities.” (Suri and Hendrix, 2010 p.63)
